On her toes

For a few years now Lainey has been in awe of my old pointe shoes,
and would try them on at home.  (her dance teacher would not approve of this!)
She would bring my old Capezio shoes to her dance studio and show all her friends.

My shoes were way too big, but that didn't stop her.

She must have been playing with my makeup that day

You can imagine Lainey's excitement to receive a letter that she was ready to dance on her toes!
Lainey had her first pointe shoe fitting in August and we had fun sewing her ribbons on.
It's a rite of passage to sew your first shoe ribbons.

This was the first dance shop we visited.  It was a beautiful place!

Lainey first tried a pair of  Russian Pointe shoes and loved the fit.
She had a wonderful experience with her first fitting and felt like a princess!

The only concern I had was there were only two
brands of pointe shoes to choose from, and it seemed like Lainey struggled a bit
to get all the way over.

For a first fitting it's important to try many different styles, so we headed to a store (2 hours away) that her teacher had highly recommended.

Even though it was a long drive, this store had a much larger selection of pointe shoes
and Lainey was able to try Freeds and Grishko's.
Unfortunately they didn't have Freeds in her small
foot size and she loved those best, but the Grishko's were also a great fit.

She went with the Grishko's!   *Lainey age 10

Lainey had Nutcracker auditions in September and is very happy to be
a "Party Girl" this year. (one of "Clara's friends")
It's a role she's been dreaming about since she was a little girl.  (besides the coveted Clara)
One of her best friend's Kayleigh also made the part.

Butterflies in her tummy!  I had them too.   There are only 8 party girls chosen and 3 casts,
so it's a tough role to get with the hundreds of kids auditioning.
It's awful to see the kids come out crying and my anxiety
level was very high as we waited and watched group after group being dismissed.
It breaks my heart to see my own child come out crying, but when it's
someone else's kid in tears and mine gets a part,  I feel even worse!  :(
I want to run and give them my child's audition letter.

Last year she was just a hair too short for the role, and by next year she might
be too tall.  She had tried for party girl last year and was given a prologue child role.
Unless she doesn't grow,  I knew this might be her last opportunity.
Thankfully her audition went really well.  She feels very fortunate.

I look for any excuse to eat there! :)

Luke and Baila also auditioned again this year, but a different day than Lainey.
Luke has been practicing and listening to the Nutcracker music for the last two months,
so it's a dream come true for him to be one of "Mother Ginger's" Children.
(the little ones who come out from under the huge dress)
Last year I had to be the crying shoulder when he didn't get the part,
so this is a very sweet moment for him.
There must have been 200 kids who auditioned for that role this year.
The line was enormous.
I was at the audition from 8:00am until 4pm by the time both kids were done.
Baila was 1 inch too short for Mother Ginger so she had to try out
for other roles.

Baila was given the cute part of "Christmas Hungarian Doll."
I can't wait to get pictures of her in that adorable costume!

You can see Luke's part toward the end of this video at 1:43

  1. So much fun, the pointe shoes look very nice on her. I remember driving 3 hours to get shoes, it was a pain, that is why my mom would three at a time. Eventually we ordered them online and had them shipped. It was easier. I am excited for her to be a party girl. That was one of my favorite roles. I still remember all the choreography for it. Good job Laniey and Luke and Baila.

  2. Her teacher is going very slowly in their pointe class so I don't think I'll have to worry about buying another pair for a very long time (unless she outgrows them) haha Lainey gets in trouble if her teacher catches them going on pointe without permission.
They really need to get broken in but for brand new I was surprised how good her arch looked in them. The Grishko's mold to the foot so well. The Sac Ballet use Freeds and I heard they really melt into the foot too but professional dancers go through one pair a performance sometimes. I wouldn't know...I only had the option of Capezio shoes when I danced.

  3. Brings back memories! used to hate the way my stomach felt before and during auditions. Barbara was so austere. I think if had to, I could still do the choreography for the marshmallow children. Congratulations to your kids!

  4. Freeds are not made for long term wear, I tried Freeds and went through a pair a class, my mom was like no way, I can't afford to do this. Plus you find a maker, I liked crowns and then you can't find them again the next time you go. And then my maker stopped making them all together. Grishko's lasted the longest and looked the best for me and my best friend who danced with me. Lainey's will last the year unless her feet grow alot. Funny, when I got my shoes I would beat them with a hammer, and use water to soften them up and make it easier to brake them in. I had friends who would have me wear their shoes to brake them in because my arch was so strong that I could do it faster, like a couple of mins, then them, who would take a whole class or more. I actually broke a friends pair of brand new shoes and my mom said no more. My friends were sad that I couldn't do the hard work for them any more.

  5. Hi Caren, :)
Yeah, I will never forget how strict Barbara was with us. So many fun memories dancing there. I've heard she still teaches! (Sac Ballet is no longer connected to the Crockett ballet)

I remember when you were a marshmallow child! So cute. Did the marshmallows have a red costume? I remember wishing I could dance that part (and Party Girl) but I was too tall by the time I started auditioning for the show.

  6. Hi Heather,
I'm glad to hear the Grishko's last longer than Freeds for Lainey's future. I think her arch looks best in them too. She had no trouble going over in them. In fact, it almost seemed like she could go too far over. Her teacher did some door slamming to break em in her first day.

That is funny about you being used to break in shoes!

  7. The marshmallows did have red costumes. And I think we had to paint our shoes red, too. I desperately wanted to be a party girl but never quite could make the cut. Weren't we soldiers and angels together?

  8. Yes, we were soldiers together. I also have pictures of us dancing the baby swan role with those beautiful white tutus. I still have the costume. :)
